Benzonatate is a medication used to relieve the discomfort of a dry, hacking cough. It works by blocking signals in the brain that trigger the cough reflex. Benzonatate comes in tablet, capsule, and liquid form, and is usually taken three or four times per day as needed. The usual dosage for adults and children over 10 years old is one 100-mg tablet or capsule three or four times per day. Some liquid forms of the medication are also available over-the-counter.
Benzonatate is generally well-tolerated. However, some side effects can occur, including nausea, vomiting, and constipation. Benzonatate should not be used by people with a history of seizures or head injuries, or who are taking other medications that can cause drowsiness.
