Wiring a three-way switch allows you to control a single light fixture from two different locations. This is commonly used in hallways, stairwells, and other areas where you want to be able to turn the lights on or off from either end.
Three-way switches are more complex to wire than single-pole switches, but the benefits of having two control points for a single light fixture often outweigh the added complexity.
